Human Sentences

This activity is a great way to practice forming sentences. It allows the students to work together and not feel embarrassed if they make a mistake. It can work for big classes too!

Procedure

Write several sentences on a piece of paper, according to the level of your students. Then copy each word from the sentences onto a piece of paper. (One word per piece of paper.) Mix the papers up for each sentence and paperclip them together. OR have the students do this for homework or as an activity in class the day before to avoid doing the work yourself.

Ask for volunteers or go by rows and hand a word to each student. The students must arrange themselves to form the sentence correctly.

For example, you can hald out these words: walk, I, tomorrow, the, will, to, bank, big

Student’s form: I will walk to the big bank tomorrow.

You can also rearrange them to form questions: Will I walk to the big bank tomorrow?

You can have the students not participating in the human sentence write it down to keep them busy and quiet. You can also have them work in groups and pass out a mixed up sentence to each group and then they have to present in front of the class.

*Tip: For bigger classes, if you need more words in a sentence, add punctuation marks.
